The Small Business Guide to Health and Safety Training in Dorset
If you employ people, even just one, you have legal duties for their health and safety. It sounds daunting, but for most small businesses in Dorset it boils down to a handful of sensible steps.
1. Fire safety training for everyone
Every member of staff needs fire safety awareness training when they start and regularly afterwards. Nominate one or more fire marshals and get them trained properly.
2. First aid provision
Carry out a first aid needs assessment and train the right number of people to the right level. For most small, low risk businesses that is at least one EFAW trained first aider.
3. General health and safety awareness
A short Level 1 course for all staff and a Level 2 course for supervisors shows you have taken reasonable steps and reduces accidents.
4. Someone in charge
If you have five or more employees you need a written health and safety policy and risk assessments. A Level 3 qualification gives a manager the skills to own this.
5. Keep records
Keep certificates, attendance records and your training matrix up to date. Inspectors and insurers will ask.
